Personal Testimony and Recovery Advocacy: William “Cody” Long on Mental Health and Hope

William “Cody” Long shared a powerful personal testimony on recovery, mental health, and community support. A McDowell County native in long-term recovery, he spoke about growing up without understanding mental health and turning to substance use as a coping mechanism. Through faith, support, and treatment, he found recovery and now serves as a peer recovery specialist, helping others facing similar struggles.

He emphasized the growing need for mental health awareness and suicide prevention, highlighting the impact of isolation and rising crisis rates. Long introduced the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and Help for West Virginia, explaining how these services provide 24/7 support, treatment connections, and remove barriers like cost and access to care.

Long concluded by noting the progress in West Virginia’s approach to addiction, shifting from punishment to treatment and support. He encouraged communities and churches to stay informed, offer compassion, and provide resources like Narcan training, stressing that real change starts with understanding and showing up for those in need.
