Keynote Address by Jasmine Simmons: Equity, Innovation, and Tobacco Prevention in Mecklenburg County
Jasmine Simmons of Mecklenburg County Public Health delivered a keynote on using data, education, and community outreach to reduce tobacco use. She highlighted major disparities, noting that while overall smoking rates are low, Black residents smoke at significantly higher rates, with menthol use nearly universal in that population. Her coalition focuses on health equity through policy change, education, and culturally tailored support.
She explained the dangers of modern tobacco products, including vapes, hookah, and nicotine pouches, emphasizing that all carry serious health risks. Simmons shared striking comparisons showing how quickly nicotine addiction can develop, especially among youth, and reinforced that there is no safe level of exposure, including secondhand and thirdhand smoke.
The presentation concluded with real-world campaign strategies, including targeted media outreach, community partnerships, and digital engagement tools that drive people to quit resources. Her message was clear: combining local storytelling, creative outreach, and equity-focused education can help communities reduce tobacco use and build a healthier future.
