Keynote Presentation by Andrea Radford: Tobacco, Cancer, and Community Action

Andrea Radford of the American Cancer Society delivered a data-driven presentation on tobacco use, cancer prevention, and community impact. She highlighted that tobacco remains a leading cause of cancer, with lung cancer as the top cause of death, and emphasized that early detection and screenings are key to improving survival rates. Her data showed persistent disparities, with Black men experiencing higher cancer incidence and mortality rates.

She reinforced that many cancer risks are preventable, particularly through reducing tobacco use, improving diet, and increasing physical activity. Radford also addressed common misconceptions about products like light cigarettes and hookah, stressing that they carry serious health risks. Screening recommendations and lifestyle changes were presented as critical tools for improving long-term health outcomes.

The presentation concluded with practical strategies for community engagement, encouraging churches and organizations to lead awareness efforts through events, outreach, and education. Radford highlighted resources like the Quitline and the Empowered to Quit program, along with initiatives such as the Great American Smokeout. The message was clear: consistent, creative outreach and early action can save lives.
