Opening Remarks and Network Overview: Advancing Tobacco Control in West Virginia

Donald Reed opened the annual West Virginia African-American Tobacco Prevention Network gathering with appreciation for the community’s impact, recognizing partners, ministers, and leaders advancing tobacco prevention across the state. He highlighted the network’s mission to reduce tobacco use and improve health outcomes within African American communities.

He outlined the day’s agenda, including sessions on tobacco control, cancer prevention, secondhand smoke, and community outreach strategies. Reed also addressed funding challenges following federal cuts, crediting organizations like the Benedum Foundation and Center for Black Health and Equity for sustaining the network’s work.

Reed reviewed the network’s growth from its early beginnings to its relaunch in 2021, expanding from seven to twenty-six churches under the leadership of Rhonda Robinson. He emphasized key successes and concluded with a clear message: lasting progress comes from listening to communities, empowering local leaders, and building strong partnerships.
