Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Resources for West Virginia Residents

Joe Thomas, a family nurse practitioner and medical director of the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program, explains how the program helps eligible West Virginia residents receive potentially lifesaving screenings. The program’s mission is to prevent unnecessary illness, disability and premature death caused by breast and cervical cancer, particularly among people who are uninsured or underinsured.
The program can cover clinical breast examinations, mammograms, Pap tests, HPV screenings and follow-up diagnostic services when an abnormal result is found. Thomas also discusses the Medicaid Treatment Act, which can provide Medicaid coverage for eligible uninsured patients who are diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer. This coverage can continue throughout treatment and may cover healthcare needs beyond cancer treatment.
The presentation also introduces cardiovascular health services available through the program, including cholesterol testing, diabetes screening, blood pressure monitoring, health coaching and referrals to lifestyle programs. Thomas encourages churches, community organizations and families to share this information with anyone who may have delayed screening because of cost or lack of insurance.
